Don’t Be an Easy Target: Simple Steps to Stay Safe from Robbery

West Midlands Police is encouraging residents to take a few simple precautions to reduce their risk of becoming a victim of robbery.

While robberies are relatively uncommon, they can have a significant impact on victims. By staying alert and taking sensible safety measures, you can help protect yourself and your belongings. 

Stay Aware of Your Surroundings

Criminals often look for people who appear distracted or unaware. When out and about, remain alert to what is happening around you, avoid becoming absorbed in your mobile phone, and walk with confidence and purpose. 

Keep Valuables Out of Sight

Mobile phones, watches, jewellery, wallets and other valuable items can attract unwanted attention. Keep valuables concealed where possible and avoid displaying expensive items in public places. If you need to use your phone, stay aware of your surroundings and hold it securely. 

Plan Your Journey

Whenever possible, stick to busy, well-lit routes and avoid isolated areas. If travelling at night, think ahead about how you will get home and consider using licensed taxis or pre-booked transport. Let someone know your plans if you are travelling alone. 

Protect Your Belongings

Never leave bags, phones, purses or other valuables unattended, even for a moment. Keep bags close to your body and avoid hanging them on the backs of chairs or placing valuables on tables where they can be easily taken. 

Secure Your Mobile Phone

Make a note of your phone’s IMEI number by dialling *#06# and storing the number somewhere safe. Enable security features such as screen locks, two-factor authentication and tracking services to improve the chances of recovering your device if it is lost or stolen. 

Trust Your Instincts

If a situation feels wrong, move to a safer location where there are other people around. Avoid confrontation and leave the area if you feel threatened. Staying safe should always be your priority. 

If You Are Confronted by a Robber

Your personal safety is far more important than any possession. If you are threatened with violence, do not resist. Hand over the property if asked and try to remember details about the offender that could help police later. Once safe, contact the police as soon as possible. 

Report Crime and Suspicious Behaviour

If a robbery is taking place or there is an immediate danger, call 999. For non-emergencies, report incidents to police on 101 or through online reporting services. Reporting suspicious behaviour can help prevent future offences and protect your community. 

By staying alert, protecting your valuables and planning ahead, everyone can play a part in reducing robbery and helping to keep communities across the West Midlands safe.
